Iran among the 100 Top Science and Technology Clusters in the World/The 9th Rank for Tehran

Once again, the scientific and technological abilities of Iran are shown; this time, in the field of innovation. The 2020 Global Innovation Index (Gii) has had good news about Iran. Tehran was ranked ninth in terms of science and technology among moderate-income countries.

Innovation has always been pleasant for humans, since cave time to date. Innovation and creativity of people are new gifts for humans. Even now, with the outbreak of corona, the eyes of the world are on scientists to offer a solution to get rid of this virus.

Given the importance of this issue, the World Intellectual Property Organization presents a report on the innovation status of the world every year known as the “Global Innovation Index”. The report measures and compares innovation levels in various countries and regions. This measurement requires issues such as business complexity, education costs and creative outputs in economy.

Since 2017, however, the report introduces 100 top science and technology clusters at the level of countries entitled “ranking of the top clusters of science and technology”.

This ranking is made by measuring the innovation performance at the regional level (beyond the national economy framework of countries) and based on the spatial distribution of innovative activities. In this regard, 100 innovation regions with the highest dynamism in scientific and technological activities are introduced. In this respect, the Gii report recognizes and focuses on regions with higher density in the number of inventors and authors of scientific publications.

New Achievements of Iran in the Field of Science and Technology

Gii report 2020 has had good news about Iran. Tehran was ranked ninth in terms of top science and technology clusters (regions) in moderate-income countries and was ranked above cities such as Berlin (44), Zurich (49), Bangalore (60), Delhi (67), Lausanne (89), Vienna (70), Istanbul (51), Sao Paulo (61), Ankara (88) and Mumbai (98).

In the 2020 rankings, the Tokyo-Yokohama region of Japan was ranked first, as it did last year, due to the region's excellent patent performance. In general, the list of top regions in 2020 has not changed much compared to previous years, which is due to the calculation of regions based on their cumulative performance over a period of five years. This implies the fact that innovative regions, after being formed over relatively long periods of time, are very stable in maintaining their innovative status.

In addition, receiving the rank of 43 out of 100 top clusters of science and technology in the world (for the third consecutive time) and 3 rankings of improvement compared to 2019 are other cases mentioned in this report.

Brazil, China, India, Iran, Russia and Turkey are the only developing and emerging countries in the top 100 science and technology clusters in the world.
