Iran’s rank in the field of article publication improved to 11 in 2018 by the efforts of domestic experts in the field of lasers and photonics.

According to the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs, although more than a decade has passed since the global leap in the field of laser and photonics, and the industry is a relatively nascent field in the world, Iran has been associated with this scientific movement from the very beginning, and Iranian scientific cores have been formed in the laser and photonics sectors. The first moves in the field of lasers and photonics were made in the 70s. The 21st Century is the century of lasers, aerospace, telecommunications, military, medical, and many other important fields of science have been strongly influenced by the rapid developments in the field of laser and photonics. Laser has made medical devices smarter and produces more efficient weapons for the military, and laser and photon technology have also dramatically increased the pace of developments in the Internet and telecommunications sectors.

In Iran, two areas of lasers and photonics and advanced materials were combined to form the lasers and photonics, advanced materials and construction technologies development headquarter to have a more purposeful policy-making. Hamid Lotfi, the secretary of the headquarter, expressed that 60 knowledge-based projects are prioritized for receiving facilities after judgment as the last part of supportive measures in this field.

After years of research and formation of separate and self-propelled cores in various parts of the country, despite a lot of work not yet done, a remarkable ecosystem has emerged in the field of laser and photonics that is able to respond to scientific needs of the country. Currently, more than 50 thousand articles have been published in this area in the world, 1650 of which belong to Iran. In the 80s, Iran’s rank was above 40, which reached 11 in 2018 by the efforts of the creative youth in the country. However, there is still so much work to do in this area, including the commercialization of projects, for which the country requires the efforts of more young experts in the country.
