The secretary of stem cells sciences and technologies development headquarter states: transplantation of stem cells of umbilical cord not only provides an opportunity to treat incurable diseases, but also the use of obstetric wastes could be efficient and beneficial. Obstetric wastes should not be thrown out.
According to the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs, the Commemoration Ceremony of Global Day of “stem cells of umbilical cord” was held in the presence of activists of the field and prominent professors of Royan Research Center to commemorate the services of physicians and service-providers of the field.
Amir Ali Hamidieh, the secretary of stem cells sciences and technologies development headquarter, mentioned that the use of umbilical cord stem cells is not limited to the treatment of blood diseases, expressing: transplantation of umbilical cord stem cells has been initiated since35 years ago in the world and 20 years ago in Iran. However, a significant attention has been drawn to this area in the past 15 years, and the same amount of development has been made at the international level.
The secretary of stem cells sciences and technologies development headquarter pointed out that the first transplantation of umbilical cord blood in children has been recently carried out, affirming: in general, 13-14 types of diseases can be treated in adults with the help of transplantation of umbilical cord blood. However, these diseases have reached 60 in children.
Hamidieh also mentioned two important activities in the field of stem cells, adding: these two programs are stem cell displacement fleet and creating an umbilical cord and obstetric wastes refinery, which can be established in the country to use other umbilical cord products in addition to stem cells.
