The controversial quarrels over the phenomenon of emigration in the country have become a greater challenge, compared to the actual phenomenon of emigration and its consequences.

According to the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs, emigration phenomenon (especially among adults and graduates) has been turned into a hot and popular topic in the past few decades in Iran. Considering the demographic structure of the Iranian population, which is an important part of the youth, this issue has always been the focus of attention.

Meanwhile, it seems that the controversial issues and biased comments on emigration have made a challenging phenomenon in political, social, and economic nurturing of Iran. In fact, the controversial quarrels over the phenomenon of emigration in the country have become a greater challenge, compared to the actual phenomenon of emigration and its consequences.

Useless focus on controversial issues related to the international emigration rate of Iran has created a chaotic situation, that not only does not help solve the problem, but also contributes to the deepening of issues in this field and losing opportunities in this area.

We just need to glance at the published content on this topic to realize that the volume of non-scientific comments on this issue are thousands of times more than scientific content, statistical research, and evidence and reports on the topic that must be published on the foundations and incentives for different types of emigration, as well as its impacts, threats, and opportunities.

In this regard, it is attempted to evaluate and respond to the claims by continuous presentation of contents.

A claim is: “evaluation of results of emigration by the United Nations on August 1965 showed that Iran was ranked fifth at the end of the table (near zero) in terms of emigration to other countries”. Meanwhile, referring to the data of the global databank on international emigration rate of the country in the 1960s showed that Iran was ranked 76 among 232 countries. In other words, 7.8 per each one thousand people lived abroad.

Data related to the emigration of countries exist on the database of the United Nations since 1990. The data related to the 60s was extracted by the global bank. On the other hand, according to the data of the global bank, Iran had 171,478 emigrants in the 1960s.

In addition, Iran’s rank was 76 among 232 countries at that time. Moreover, the net emigration rate of Iran was -0.07 per 1000 people based on the data of the United Nations. This rate was achieved by dividing the number of input emigrants by the output emigrants. Therefore, the data existing on the database of the United Nations in the 60s could not accurately estimate the rate of Iranian emigrants outside the country since the input emigrants have not been considered.
