The vice president for science and technology affairs entered Switzerland.

Today, the vice president for science and technology affairs entered the city of Geneva in Switzerland for attending the “20th annual meeting of science and technology commission for development of United Nations” and the ceremony of unveiling the UNCTAD report on science, technology and innovation policies of Iran.

According to the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs, Ali Morteza Birang, deputy for international affairs and technological exchange, discussed the travel of Sorena Sattari, the vice president for science and technology affairs, to Switzerland, stating: UNCTAD or United Nations Conference on Trade and Development provides reports on the current situation of science, technology and innovation policies in different countries. To the present, these reports have been prepared for a few countries. In 2005, this organization assessed the policies of Iran in fields of science, technology and innovation. However, there was no Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs in Iran at that time and new technology fields, including nanotechnology, were in the beginning of their path.

Unveiling of UNCTAD Report on Science, Technology and Innovation Policies of Iran

Birang mentioned the fact that publication of this report will be a reliable reference on an international level, expressing: we presented a request for updating this report to the UNCTAD organization two years ago and insisted on its release. Given the fact that this report has not been provided for many countries, it was difficult to obtain their agreement for this update. Fortunately, we succeeded after a long-term follow-up and preparation of this report was initiated in the presence of experts of this organization. A few months ago, the initial unveiling of the report was carried out in the presence of head of secretariat of UNCTAD at the location of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs.

Deputy for international affairs and technological exchange also affirmed: on the “20th annual meeting of science and technology commission for development of United Nations”, the UNCTAD report on technology, science and innovation policies of Iran will be unveiled on May 10th in the presence of representatives from 45 member countries of the committee. Our vice president for science and technology was also invited to attend this ceremony. This report will have a significant impact on the international status of Iran, presenting a positive picture of the achievements of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of science and technology.

Meeting with Iranian Professor and Experts Residing in Switzerland

According to Birang, Sattari will have other plans during this one-and-a-half-day trip to Switzerland. Birang stated: meeting with Iranian professors and experts residing in Switzerland in another plan during this travel. More than 100 professors will meet with Sattari in a friendly gathering at EPFL University in city of Lausanne. In this meeting, reports on progress of Iran in various science and technology fields and plans of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs regarding cooperation with non-resident Iranian experts will be provided and Sattari will have another meeting with officials and professors of EPFL University.

Signing of a Cooperation Agreement in the Field of Medical Robotics

Birang also pointed out the signing of a cooperation agreement, asserting: in addition, a cooperation agreement will be signed between LSRO laboratory in Federal Polytechnic University of Lausanne and hospital of Geneva and Innovative robotics and medical company of Sina. According to this agreement, a surgical robot system made by Iran will be installed in hospital of Geneva. In addition, a number of robotic PhD candidates from EPFL University will travel to Iran and be trained.

Visit of “CERN” Project

Deputy for international affairs and technological exchange mentioned the visit of “CERN” project as another plan of Sattari during this travel, expressing: “CERN” is the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, in which more than 10 thousand scientists from various countries are active in the fields of experimental particles physics, engineering and theoretical physics. There are 20 Iranian scientists among these individuals. Currently, Iran cooperates with CMS detector testing and future accelerating projects of FCC and CLIC and improvement of LHC accelerator. Participation in “CERN” project is another act of Iran, which is both essential for attending in basic explorations and in raising the technological awareness of the country.

According to this report, Sattari is accompanied by Ali Morteza Birang, deputy for international affairs and technological exchange, Mehdi Eliasi, deputy of policy and strategic assessment, Saeed Sarkar, secretary of nanotechnology development headquarters, and Parviz Karami, secretary of headquarter of developing culture of science, technology, and knowledge-based economy.
