Recognition and separation of cyclic cancerous cells in blood is realized

Design and manufacturing of a centrifugal microfluidic device to recognize and isolate cyclic cancerous cells in blood is a project performed by researchers of Sharif University of Technology, supported by the national elites foundation.

According to the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs, “design and manufacturing of a centrifugal microfluidic device to recognize and isolate cyclic cancerous cells in blood” is the title of a project performed by researchers of Sharif University of Technology, supported by the national elites foundation. This project follows the design and manufacturing of a centrifugal microfluidic device in order to detect and separate cyclic cancerous cells in blood. Placing of this device on a circling system leads to flow of blood sample using centrifugal forces without a need for external pumps inside the flow device. In the end, separation of target cells from other cells in the blood is carried out by a magnetic field and centrifugal forces.

Simulation and Manufacturing of a Centrifugal Microfluidic Device

In this project, exclusive separation by special Ep-CAM for MCF7 cancer cells is used to separate the cells. In addition, the special antibody of cancerous cell is covered with magnetic nanoparticles over a chemical process and is made contact with cellular sample. After that, the cancer cells are separated from healthy cells by magnetic field. To pass this path, all operative units are first designed and modeled in the software phase, and the simulation results are evaluated, followed by the establishment of the microfluidic system.

Therefore, the goal of this project is designing a centrifugal microfluidic device for separation of CTC’s from blood sample of patients to achieve a high purity of CTCs through each test in a short duration and by spending a low cost.
