According to the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs, Mahmoud Mehrdad Shokrieh, secretary of advanced materials and manufacturing technologies development headquarter, expressed about the future challenges of knowledge-based companies: one of the most important challenges is newly emerged and small companies (approximately 49% of the total second-hand companies) with limited resources, including financial, human, and infrastructural resources, which are at the beginning of the commercialization path and it is not clear how long they will be sustainable. 

He continued: the market is another challenge, which is the most important topic. Most of the companies have no specific market and have been established merely based on the personal abilities and favorites, or might not have a proper share despite the appropriate domestic market. In terms of export, more abilities are needed, mostly small and medium sized enterprises.

According to this report, the area of advanced materials and manufacturing is a transcendental topic, in a way that it is related to nine areas. However, most companies in this field are in the second category with the title of “advanced materials and products based on chemical technologies”. In total, 388 knowledge-based companies (11% of all knowledge-based companies) are in this category. In all of the companies of this category, there are 152 type-one newly emerged companies, 117 type-two production companies, 82 type-one production companies, and 37 type-two companies.
