Announcing the publication of the English version of the outlook, Parviz Karami stated: this version of Iran Migration Outlook is published with the cooperation of a group of researchers and activists in the field of international immigrations in cooperation with Iran Migration Inventory affiliated with the policy-making research institution of the Sharif University of Technology. It is notable that the outlook was published by Danesh Bonyan Fanavar Publications and with the support of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs. By doing so, we attempted to show the real statistics about the immigration of Iranians and provide this information for researchers of other countries and international organizations.

From Rumors of Brain Drain to Reality

The secretary of the headquarters for knowledge-based economy culture-building and soft and creative industries development emphasized that the outlook reflects the current status of Iran in terms of the number of immigration from the country based on international and reliable documents and statistics. In this regard, he continued: before the publication of this outlook, the understanding of society, media, and domestic and foreign researchers about the situation of immigration and emigration in Iran was limited to a few reports with false information, unreliable and inaccurate confusion. However, the current outlook provides real information about Iran regarding the number of immigrations to the international community both in Farsi and English languages.

The president of the information and communications center of the Vice-Presidency mentioned that inaccurate statistics have been reported about Iran’s immigration rank, adding: by providing valid documents and information gathered by a large number of researchers, the Iran Migration Outlook reveals the falsity of the claims of some media outlets and individuals who, without citing any significant statistics and analysis, said the rumor of brain drain and informs the international community about the real situation in Iran in the field of immigration.

Karami affirmed that Iran is not among the top countries regarding the number of migrations, adding: according to a report by the organization for economic co‑operation and development in 2015, Iran ranks 17th among 20 countries sending specialized immigrants. In addition, the global bank report in 2016 revealed that Iran was not among the top 20 countries with the highest number of immigration.

The secretary of the headquarters for knowledge-based economy culture-building and soft and creative industries development mentioned that the English version of the outlook presents a clear image of the country in this field to the international researchers, expressing: this August, the Farsi version of the outlook was unveiled in the presence of the vice president for science and technology affairs. Today, the publication of the English version of the outlook will pave the way for the development of migration studies by non-Farsi researchers and will present a clear image of the real migration statistics of Iran based on valid documents.

The managing director of Danesh Bonyan Fanavar Publications mentioned that Iran is among the countries that have published migration statistics in a structured way. He also asserted: in the outlook, we present valuable data and analyses in different migration areas. This book deals with detailed information in this field in the form of various chapters and in a categorized manner.

Pointing out the statistics presented in Iran Migration Outlook based on the latest research findings, asserting: in this outlook, findings such as the population of Iranians abroad, student relocations, labor migrations. Of course, information on forced migration-asylum is based on domestic sources and international reference reports.

Presenting a Clear Image of the Migration Status of Iran

Pointing out the determining of the situation of international immigrants and the share of the Iranian immigrant population in the world immigrant population basket based on various indicators, Karami marked: the number of Iranian students studying in the universities of the United States as one of the most important education destinations of international students in Iran and the world, the process of issuing different types of student visas along with the number and position of the Iranian student population in the top universities in the United States and the world in comparison with student countries are among the factors determining the share of Iranian migration in the world.

Karami expressed that Iran’s ability in returning non-resident and international Iranian elites to the country has been assessed in the outlook, adding: the rate of return of Iranian specialists and graduates to the country, the net index of return of Iranian elites are among the important topics of this yearbook. In addition, the process of international transfer of Iranian students over several decades, based on the latest sources and the ups and downs of the rank of Iranian students in the world, the population of international students studying in Iran are presented.

The advisor to the president of the national elites foundation considered the outlook a valuable resource for future international studies, affirming: this authoritative scientific reference will be useful for analysis and policy in the field of immigration, and by updating the statistics and analysis of the Persian version, the English version will be updated regularly and on a website for this purpose.
