Annual exit of 180,000 graduates from the country; a claim that has no statistical basis

Annual exit of 180,000 graduates from the country; a claim that has no statistical basis

If 180,000 people with higher education exit the country on an annual basis, almost 1.8 million Iranian graduates will emigrate to other countries in just 10 years.

According to the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs, one of the important points about the issue of elite immigration is the overwhelming emphasis on the baseless allegations of media, sometimes expressed by individuals and groups that do not fit the current logic and requirements of the country.

For instance, there is a claim that says: “180,000 Iranian graduates emigrate from Iran every year. This number has nothing to do with the demographic logic of Iran. In other words, if 180,000 people with higher education exit the country on an annual basis, almost 1.8 million Iranian graduates will emigrate to other countries in just 10 years.

According to official statistics, the maximum number of Iranian international students abroad has been 52,000 in recent years.

On the other hand, according to the latest statistics, the total number of Iranian immigrants with university education in the OECD countries was 741,000. Data from international databases also show that claiming that 180,000 university graduates emigrate from Iran is inconsistent with data on the number of Iranians abroad.

According to statistics from UNESCO, the maximum number of Iranian students abroad in recent years was about 52,000 in 2016. This number is related to the total number of International Iranian students and not recently registered people. In addition, according to the 2000 census, 50.9 percent of Iranian immigrants in the United States hold a bachelor"s degree or higher. The US Census Bureau estimated the number of Iranians in the country at 395,429 in 2017.

Based on what was said, it could be expressed that the total number of Iranians studying in the United States was about 200,000 in 2017. During 2010-2011, about 471,000 people of the total population of Iranian emigrants (932,000) in OECD countries were skilled and educated.

In the end, it could be marked that with regard to the reliable statistics, the claim of exit of 180,000 Iranian graduates every year is not consistent with the data on the number of emigration of Iranian graduates.
